Perceptual Testing

What is Perceptual Testing

Perceptual Testing looks at the brain side of vision- how visual information is understood, organized, and used. These skills are essential for reading, comprehension, handwriting, spelling, math, sports, and everyday tasks.

What We Assess

During the assessment, we measure abilities such as:

  • Visual memory
  • Visual discrimination
  • Visual-motor integration
  • Spatial awareness
  • Auditory-visual integration
  • Processing speed
  • Visual sequencing and pattern recognition

These skills help us understand why a child may struggle with reading, losing their place, reversing letters and numbers, or having difficulty copying from the board-even if their eyesight is 20/20.

Why It Matters

Many learning challenges are rooted in visual-processing difficulties, not intelligence or effort. When the brain has trouble interpreting what the eyes see, schoolwork becomes frustrating and exhausting.

Perceptual Testing helps answer questions like:

  • Why is reading so hard for my child?
  • Why do they mix up letters or skip words?
  • Why is handwriting messy or slow?
  • Why do they avoid homework or reading aloud?

Understanding why these challenges occur is the first step toward meaningful improvement.

What To expect During the Evaluation

Our perceptual evaluation is calm, supportive, and tailored to each patient's age and needs. During the appointment, we:

  • Use hands-on activities and visual tasks
  • Assess how the eyes and brain work together
  • Identify strengths and areas that may need support

After the appointment, the scores are carefully reviewed by Dr. Ballinger who interprets the results so we can provide a clear, accurate explanation of what they mean. Families are invited back for a follow-up consultation where Dr. Ballinger goes over the findings in parent-friendly language and discuss recommended next steps. A written report can also be provided for parents, teacher, or school districts who need documentation for academic support or accommodations.

How Perceptual Testing Works With Vision Therapy

Perceptual Testing helps us determine whether Vision Therapy is recommended and which skills need strengthening. Together, they create a complete picture of how the visual system is functioning.

  • Perceptual Testing identifies the processing challenges
  • Vision Therapy strengthens the skills needed to overcome them
